Objectives:
- Demonstrate to the students (by example) that it is normal to experience challenges in the Ph.D., and that it’s a good idea to talk about these challenges with their peers.
- Help students distinguish between “good” challenges and “unhelpful” challenges through the lens of self-expectations.
- Introduce the term hidden curriculum to describe the implicit expectations surrounding how docotral students should think, talk, look like, and what they should value. Connect this to previous soft skill building (i.e. soft skills are an important component of the hidden curriculum of the Ph.D.).
- Introduce a model for Ph.D. student development and emphasize that expectations are a function of each students’ stage in the program.

Example Statements for Panelists
In class, we ask the panelists to raise their hands if they relate to statements describing common (but seldom discussed) challenges of the Ph.D. We find this allows panelists to lead by example – i.e. to show that struggle is normal and nothing to be ashamed of. This helps create a safe space for students to ask difficult questions that are on their mind. It is okay if not all panelists raise their hands; this could be a good place for discussion.
Note: Not all panelists will be comfortable being so open about their experience. As such, it is vital to check with them a priori. It is especially important to take care asking panelists from minoritized backgrounds and identities to comment on statements that align with negative societal stereotypes. We found it helpful to have a meeting with the panelists prior to the session and lead an open discussion to best understand everyone’s boundaries.
Note: We did find that leading such discussions was not only helpful for students, but also for the panelists. Oftentimes, junior panelists asked for advice from senior panelists, and all panelists expressed a sense of validation from having such an open discussion about shared struggles.

- “I see my peers doing a ton of internship interviews/social activities/professional development, whereas I’m just barely making pset deadlines. Should I be doing more? If so, how?”
- “I feel like I don’t have the right background to succeed – I haven’t been coding since high school / I didn’t do my undergrad in math/CS.”
Question Bank
- Detecting and addressing unhealthy expectations:
- What is an effective way to erase a bad habit of a negative self-expectation and how do we detect one?
- What is a struggle around expectations that you still face?
- How do we check if we meet our advisor’s expectations? The guide suggests that we directly ask them, but sometimes people are reluctant to give negative feedback in person.
- I was expecting to do more “great” research work by this point. Is it an unhealthy self-expectation?
- If we need to lower expectations too much for them to be unhealthy, should we even keep going? If we need to adjust our expectations too much, does it mean that we’re not the right people to do this?

- While I know I should not compare myself to everyone surrounding me, I don’t know how not to. Do you still find yourself doing this? How do you either prevent it or minimize the effect it has on you?

- In what ways have you improved during the Ph.D.? How have you changed?
- What are some good ways to set short term and long term goals during a semester? To feel like you’re advancing in your Ph.D., what are some good milestones to set for a semester?
- How do you create rewards for yourself when doing your long term research, or how do you associate positive validation with things as simple as running an experiment or reading a paper?
- How do you deal with a couple weeks in which you are too busy or demotivated to do research work (eg. busy with courses)? How do you maintain communication with your advisor during these periods?
- I find it difficult to express what I’ve thought about in the meetings with several professors. Do you have advice for speaking up in meetings?
- Identity:
- Difficult experiences are often difficult because they challenge our identities / how we think of ourselves. What was an experience you had that challenged your identity? How did you reconcile your old and new identities?
- How do you deal with the self-imposed pressure of wanting to make worthwhile scientific contributions despite being in either a fast-paced field like ML/NLP or in a field that’s new to you whose “mainstream” contributions and methods you don’t fully understand or agree with?
- What do you do when you set expectations for yourself that seem toxic to everyone around you but that you are okay with? Is it worth it to constantly explain yourself and your rationale?

- What is your community? How did you find it? What role does it have in your Ph.D. experience?
